A lifetime moment for me in Auckland, NZ
Content:
On 3rd November, 2006 Manna Da came to the Dorothy Winstone Theatre, Auckland Girls Grammer School theatre along with his wife, Resp.Bahu Di. He was feeling cold. Surely, since he is not at all accustomed to the cold weather here in NZ. He said \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"I come from Bombay where it is very hot. But here....Auckland is very cold..... \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" hence, he was wearing a red sweater above which was his grey suit and ususal hat.
Arpita Chandra, started the show by singing \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Allah tero naam......\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and then we had a feast of songs from our own Manna Da. It started with his well known \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Bhay Bhanjana.......\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" in which he paid tributes to Shankar Jaikishan. Then talking about Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad he sang \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Jindariya kaTati jaaye re....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" mentioning Naushad\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Folk Music touch. At this particulr juncture, he also stated that such songs remind us always of our roots. Then came the ever lasting \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"kaun aaya mere mun ke dware....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" followed by \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Tu pyaar ka saagar hai.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\", \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Dil ka haal sune dilwala.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\". He then paid tributes to Roshan & Sahir Ludhianwi. At this time while referring to Late Roshan he said \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"This Roshan... you know, today Rhitik Roshan who is your heart-throb, he was his grandfather...\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and the hall burst into laughter. He sang \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Maaro kalejawa katyaar.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and then talking about Gulzar saab and Late Vasant Desai he sang \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Jeevan se lambe hai bandhu....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Then came \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"jindagi kaisi hai paheli.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" In this particular song he sang a stanza which I heard for the first time. This one is never played on radio ever. This was followed by Prem Dhawan and Ravi\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Tujhe suraj kahun ya chanda.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and then the Bengalis started requesting for a Bengali number and obliged did he by singing \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"bajegi lolaay.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"(I am not too sure of these wordings..pls. forgive me...) In this particular song he paid tributes to Salil Chowdhary saying he is a prolific writer/ Unique music and a \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'maane hue lekhak.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' At this point, he again created a lughter saying \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ye mere saathi hai, unhe jara chaay pani chahiye... to hum aate hain thodi der mein....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' Saying this, he parted for a break....
The second session after the interval started with his all time favourite \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"O meri Johra jabeen.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\". Then came the song with its utmost classical base of which Manna Da himself is so well versed with. It was \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Jhanak jhanak tori baaje ......\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" For this particular song he told that the music makers made him sing such difficult songs for which he had to prepare himself thoro?ghly. And I quote \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"it was my good fortune that I could sing for them\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\". Then mentioning SD Burman\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s association he told that they both knew each other from college days when SD visited them to learn from his uncle K.C.Dey. SD\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s personality attracted him. And later it was SD who chose Manna Da to assist him. And paying tribute he sang \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"tere naina talash kare jise......\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"... Then mentioning the unusual song, very much unlike Shammi Kapoor, his personality himself he rendered \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"chhum chhum baje re payaliya....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Then remembering Ravindra Jain, he said \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ye hamare Ravi hai na, maane hue sangeetkar the, they kya, hai\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"he sang the touching \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"dur hai kinara.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" followed by the wonderful \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"laaga chunari mein daag...\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Oh my god...and how awesomely he rendered it. At the age of 87 (if I am not wrong) a person can sing so well, just could not believe it. Just fabulous.
The Bengalis were getting restless and asked for one of their favourites \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Coffee House...\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" song. This particular song is penned by Gauri Prasanna and the coffee house still exists at Kolkata. Manna Da said \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Here all who was somebody or had eminence visited to have a cup of coffee. Even Satyajit Ray could not stop himself from going there\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\". He termed this song as Nostalgic and touching piece. Even while singing, he himself had become so very emotional.
Then he sang \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"ksame waade pyaar ....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" from Upkaar paying tributes to Indiwar and Kalyanji Anandji. While doing so, a tone of sadness was there; jaise kahte hain na, meethey suron ko ik dukkh ki jhalar si lagi mujhe.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Kalyanji nahi rahe, Anandji bhi nahi hai. sab ek ek kar ke chal diye........\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"
And as if to pull out himself from that remeberance and uplift himself he said \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"chalo ab tumhe duets sunata hun...\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and he called for Arpita once again. The start he made was - \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"jaudi hamari jamega kaise jaani.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"and with his first sentence itself he drew laughter from the audience ( since the age difference between himself and Arpita)... How beautifully he sang this. It was a tribute to Chitragupta and Majrooh Sultanpuri.
Then he said \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"ab tumhe ek fadakti cheej sunaoon?\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and they sang \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"jhoomta mausam mast mahina....yalla yalla dil le gayi......\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Both these songs got \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Once more\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" but were not obliged ( quite naturally though).
Then he said \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"ab raat bahut ho chuki hai. bahar chandani faili hai.....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"saying he sang the evergreen \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"aaja sanam madhur chandni mein hum......\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and as the evening came to an end he gave us the last of his songs- \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Yaari hai eemaan mera.......\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"
When the audience asked for more he joked ?STRONG>\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"haan, wo to theek hai, lekin tum log sirf sun rahe ho, ye mere saathi kab se baja rahe hain..unhe bhi to thoda aram chahiye. maafi chahta hun agar tumhari pasand ke geet nahi gaye honge to....\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Excusing himself they all left the stage.
It was my privilege to have got an opportunity to listen to him, visit him and touch his feet, take his blessings. I feel its a lifetime moment for me which I will never ever be able to forget. I have penned a poem on him which I would send in my next mail. ( This mail itself is so long, Sir.)
